In a significant boost to India’s luxury tourism sector, Viking, the globally renowned cruise company, has announced plans to launch its first-ever luxury river cruise in India by 2027.
The planned cruise will traverse the iconic Ganges River, offering international and domestic travelers an immersive experience through India’s historic cities, sacred ghats, and rich cultural landscapes — all aboard a world-class floating resort.
“India’s rivers offer a timeless charm. This expansion brings Viking’s signature luxury and cultural depth to one of the world’s most spiritually and historically significant regions,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking.
- Route: Likely to include Varanasi, Patna, Kolkata, and smaller riverfront heritage towns
- Vessel Type: Custom-built, luxury river ship tailored for India’s waterways
- Launch Year: 2027
- Features: Onboard fine dining, cultural lectures, Ayurvedic wellness, and curated shore excursions
This marks Viking’s first foray into the Indian subcontinent, expanding its footprint beyond Europe, Egypt, and Southeast Asia. The move is expected to redefine high-end inland tourism in India, attracting well-heeled travelers seeking slow travel combined with deep cultural experiences.
The river cruise sector in India has remained largely untapped, with limited luxury offerings to date. Viking’s entry is likely to set a new benchmark in standards and service.
“This is more than a cruise — it’s a floating cultural experience that bridges heritage with hospitality,” said Anita Ranjan, a senior official in India’s Ministry of Tourism.
As India continues to promote its Incredible India 2.0 campaign, the Viking cruise launch aligns with national efforts to diversify tourism experiences and attract premium global visitors. By 2027, India may well be sailing into a new golden era of river luxury travel.
