In a landmark achievement for animal welfare, Sweden has officially become the first country in the world where 100% of commercially sold eggs now come from cage-free hens. The historic shift follows years of public advocacy, government policy changes, and strong consumer demand for ethical food practices.
The Swedish Food Agency confirmed that all egg producers across the country have transitioned to cage-free systems, including barn-raised, free-range, and organic setups. The move is part of Sweden’s broader sustainability and humane farming initiatives, aligning with its commitment to the European Union’s Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy.
Animal rights organizations have hailed the announcement as a major victory. “This shows what is possible when consumers, producers, and policymakers work together,” said Maria Löfgren of Djurens Rätt, Sweden’s leading animal welfare group.
