In a groundbreaking initiative to promote sustainable tourism and remote work culture, the northeastern state of Sikkim has officially declared Yakten as India’s first Digital Nomad Village.
Tucked away in the serene hills of East Sikkim, Yakten offers high-speed internet, dedicated co-working spaces, eco-friendly homestays, and uninterrupted views of the Himalayas — making it the ideal destination for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers seeking productivity and peace.
Launched under the state’s “Sikkim Workcation Project,” the initiative is designed to revive rural economies, promote offbeat tourism, and attract global professionals looking to combine work and travel.
- 24×7 fiber-optic internet connectivity
- Solar-powered co-working cafés with local cuisine
- Monthly rental plans with homestay-work bundles
- Access to treks, nature trails, and wellness activities
- Community support from local youth and entrepreneurs
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said, “Yakten represents the future of remote work. It empowers both the worker and the village.”
With its cool climate, rich Lepcha culture, and zero noise pollution, Yakten is set to become India’s answer to Bali or Madeira — but with a Himalayan twist.
Registrations for the Digital Nomad Visa Pilot are expected to open by August 2025 for both Indian and foreign nationals.
Sikkim has shown the world that you don’t need to choose between work and wanderlust — you can have both.
