Shri Sanatan Rudra Pal from West Bengal Awarded Padma Shri for Excellence in Art

Celebrating a lifetime of artistic mastery, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Shri on Shri Sanatan Rudra Pal of West Bengal for his remarkable contributions to the field of Art.

Renowned for his exquisite craftsmanship and dedication to Bengal’s rich artistic traditions, Shri Sanatan Rudra Pal has played a pivotal role in preserving and innovating the age-old art of idol-making and traditional sculpture, especially associated with the iconic Durga Puja celebrations.

A native of Kumartuli, the famed artisan hub of Kolkata, Shri Pal has redefined clay artistry through his intricate detailing, cultural sensitivity, and creative evolution of classical forms. His idols have graced pandals not only across India but also in international celebrations in countries like the UK, USA, and Singapore.

“This recognition is a tribute to all the artisans of Kumartuli who shape devotion with their hands and carry forward centuries of tradition,” said Shri Pal, reacting humbly to the national honour.

Beyond his artistic creations, he has mentored numerous young sculptors, ensuring the continuity of this vital cultural practice and uplifting the artisan community.
