Shri Ramlal Bareth Honoured with Padma Shri for Preserving Tribal Art in Chhattisgarh

Celebrated tribal artist Shri Ramlal Bareth has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in the field of Art, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting Chhattisgarh’s indigenous art traditions.

Hailing from the Bastar region, Shri Bareth is renowned for his mastery of Gond painting and Dokra metal craft—two ancient tribal art forms unique to central India. Over decades, he has revived fading techniques, trained artisans, and brought grassroots art to national and international stages.

“Our art carries the soul of our forests and festivals,” he often says, teaching young artists the significance of each motif and symbol.

Bareth has mentored hundreds of artisans from underprivileged tribal communities, helping them gain self-reliance and livelihood through traditional crafts. His community workshops and collaborations with NGOs have enabled rural artists to access modern markets and fair trade platforms.

The Padma Shri recognizes his enduring contributions not only as an artist but also as a cultural ambassador of Chhattisgarh’s tribal heritage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded him, saying:
“Ramlal Bareth’s work reminds us that India’s strength lies in its diversity and traditions. His art preserves our roots and inspires future generations.”

India salutes Shri Ramlal Bareth — a master craftsman whose brushes and molds carry the legacy of a thousand generations.
