Shri Machihan Sasa from Manipur Conferred Padma Shri for His Outstanding Contribution to Art

Celebrating Manipur’s rich cultural legacy, the Government of India has honoured Shri Machihan Sasa with the prestigious Padma Shri for his exceptional contribution to the field of Art.

A revered figure in the realm of traditional tribal art and craftsmanship, Shri Machihan Sasa has spent decades preserving and promoting the indigenous artistic expressions of Manipur’s Naga community. Known for his mastery in wood carving, indigenous musical instruments, and ritualistic art forms, he has played a vital role in documenting and reviving endangered cultural practices.

Hailing from a remote region, Shri Sasa has tirelessly worked to showcase the vibrant tribal identity of Manipur through performances, exhibitions, and cultural education. His dedication to preserving his community’s heritage has earned him immense respect not only in the Northeast but also across India.

Speaking on receiving the honour, he said, “This award is a recognition of the traditions I inherited. I accept it on behalf of my people and the ancestors who taught us to honour our art.”
