In a proud moment for Telangana and the nation’s rich cultural heritage, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Shri on Shri Gaddam Sammaiah for his outstanding contribution to the field of Art.
A revered name in the traditional leather puppet art form known as Tolu Bommalata, Shri Gaddam Sammaiah has devoted his life to preserving and promoting this ancient folk tradition of shadow puppetry, which blends storytelling, music, and intricate craftsmanship. Originating from Telangana, Tolu Bommalata has been kept alive largely due to the tireless efforts of artists like Sammaiah.
With his skill in both performance and puppet-making, Shri Sammaiah has brought mythological tales and historical legends to life on stage, enthralling audiences across India. His work has been instrumental in passing this vanishing art form to younger generations through workshops, public shows, and educational outreach.
Reacting to the honour, Shri Sammaiah humbly said, “This award is not just for me, but for all traditional artists who continue to keep our cultural roots alive with love and labour.”
Cultural institutions, folk art activists, and admirers from across Telangana have celebrated the recognition, calling him a “true guardian of heritage.”
