History was made in the world of football as Reinildo Isnard Mandava officially became the first player from Mozambique to feature in the prestigious English Premier League. The 31-year-old left-back made his debut for Nottingham Forest FC in their opening match of the 2025–26 season, cementing his place in football history.
Mandava, who previously played for Atlético Madrid and Lille, is celebrated not only for his athletic talent but also for being a trailblazer for Mozambican footballers on the global stage. Known for his pace, defensive precision, and tireless work ethic, he was instrumental in helping Lille win the Ligue 1 title in 2021 and later contributed to Atlético Madrid’s defensive setup in La Liga.
Speaking after the match, Mandava expressed his pride: “This is a dream not just for me but for my entire country. I hope this inspires many young talents in Mozambique to believe that they too can reach the top.”
His debut was widely covered across African media and celebrated by fans back home. Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi also sent a congratulatory message, calling it a proud moment for the nation.
Reinildo’s entry into the Premier League is expected to boost visibility for African players from lesser-represented nations and possibly inspire increased investment in football infrastructure across Mozambique.
