PM Modi Surpasses Indira Gandhi to Become India’s Second-Longest Serving Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially become the second-longest serving Prime Minister in India’s history, surpassing former PM Indira Gandhi’s record of 5,829 days in office.

Modi achieved this historic milestone today, marking a significant moment in Indian political history. First elected in May 2014, Modi has now completed more than 11 years in office across two consecutive terms and is currently serving his third term following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only female Prime Minister, served two terms — from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.

With this milestone, Modi stands second only to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, who held office for 6,130 days from 1947 until his death in 1964.

As the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Modi’s tenure has been marked by major policy reforms, a strong emphasis on infrastructure, digitization, and a prominent global diplomatic presence. His record-breaking run is seen as a reflection of his enduring popularity and political dominance in Indian politics.

If he completes his current term, Modi will surpass Nehru in 2029 to become the longest-serving Prime Minister in Indian history.

Top 3 Longest-Serving Indian Prime Ministers:

  1. Jawaharlal Nehru – 6,130 days
  2. Narendra Modi – 5,830+ days (as of July 25, 2025)
  3. Indira Gandhi – 5,829 days

Political analysts believe Modi’s continued leadership will further shape India’s economic and global trajectory over the coming years.
