Renowned traditional puppeteer Shri Velu Aasaan has been honored with the Padma Shri, one of India’s most prestigious civilian awards, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the ancient art of puppetry. Through decades of performance and teaching, Shri Aasaan has revived and sustained Tamil Nadu’s traditional string puppetry (Bommalattam), a fading cultural gem.

Born into a family of puppeteers, Shri Velu Aasaan learned the intricate techniques of puppet-making, manipulation, and storytelling from an early age. His mastery over Bommalattam—a form of puppet theatre unique to Tamil Nadu—has kept alive the vibrant oral traditions and visual spectacle that have entertained and educated rural audiences for generations.
