Celebrating his lifelong dedication to India’s classical art traditions, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Shri award on Shri Balakrishnan Sadanam Puthiya Veetil from Kerala for his outstanding contributions to the field of Art.
A distinguished exponent of Kathakali, Kerala’s classical dance-drama form, Shri Balakrishnan has mesmerized audiences for decades with his powerful performances, expressive storytelling, and deep command of traditional techniques. Trained under some of the finest gurus, he has brought to life iconic mythological characters on stage, preserving and popularizing this rich art form across India and abroad.
Associated with the famed Sadanam Kathakali Academy, Shri Balakrishnan has not only performed but also mentored numerous young artists, passing down the rigorous discipline and spiritual essence of Kathakali. His portrayals of characters from the Mahabharata and Ramayana are widely regarded for their emotional depth, classical precision, and dramatic flair.
“Kathakali is not just performance — it is prayer in motion,” Shri Balakrishnan said upon receiving the honour. “I dedicate this award to my gurus and the vibrant tradition of Kerala.”
Beyond the stage, he has contributed to academic research, training programs, and cultural preservation efforts, ensuring the continuity and global reach of Kerala’s classical heritage.
