Padma Shri for Kashmiri Weaver Farooq Ahmad Mir: A Life Woven in Kani Shawls

Shri Farooq Ahmad Mir, a master artisan from Srinagar, has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 in the field of Art for his extraordinary contribution to the preservation and promotion of Kashmir’s traditional Kani shawl weaving. With over six decades of experience, Mir’s dedication has made him a national symbol of artistic excellence and cultural preservation.

Beginning his journey at just 10 years old, Shri Mir has spent his life hand-weaving intricate shawls using the traditional Kani technique—a process that involves the use of small wooden sticks called “kanis” to create complex patterns without printed designs. Despite being illiterate, his deep-rooted knowledge and visual artistry have helped him mentor more than 350 weavers across the Valley, keeping the ancient craft alive.

Shri Mir’s creations, admired for their elegance and authenticity, have found admirers around the world. In 2014, he received the Sant Kabir Award, India’s highest honour for master weavers. His workshop continues to train new generations of artisans in Srinagar, making him not just a craftsman but a cultural educator.

Upon receiving the Padma Shri, Mir said humbly, “This award is not just for me, but for every artisan who continues to preserve our legacy with thread and soul.”

Officials from the J&K Handicrafts and Handloom Department praised the recognition, calling it “a tribute to Kashmir’s living heritage and a beacon of encouragement for the next generation of weavers.”
