Renowned physicist and scholar Prof. M. D. Srinivas has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 by the Government of India for his outstanding contributions to Science and Engineering. A trailblazer in both theoretical physics and the revival of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), Prof. Srinivas has dedicated over four decades to research, policy, and education.
Prof. Srinivas began his academic journey in physics, completing his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester in 1976. He made significant contributions to quantum probability and mathematical physics during his tenure at the Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Madras (1976–1996).
However, it is his unique ability to bridge modern science with India’s ancient wisdom traditions that has distinguished him nationally and globally. As Chairman of the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) in Chennai, Prof. Srinivas has advocated for contextualizing science education within India’s civilizational ethos.
He co-founded the Patriotic and People-oriented Science and Technology (PPST) Group, promoting research that aligns traditional Indian knowledge—like Vedic mathematics and astronomy—with contemporary scientific methods.
Under his guidance, the UGC’s Indian Knowledge Systems Committee (2022–2023) laid the groundwork for integrating indigenous knowledge into the Indian higher education curriculum, making a historic impact.
- Fellow, Indian National Science Academy (INSA), 2023
- Vice-Chairman, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla
- Advisor, INSA History of Science Programme
- Chairman, Centre for Policy Studies, Chennai
His scholarly works include research on the foundations of quantum mechanics, Jyotisha (Vedic astronomy), and traditional Indian agricultural practices.
“Indian knowledge systems are not relics—they are living traditions that can enrich modern science,” Prof. Srinivas has often said.
- Bridging Civilizations: His work harmonizes India’s ancient science with global modernity.
- Policy Influence: Helped shape India’s educational reforms, bringing cultural context to STEM fields.
- Mentor and Thinker: Inspired a new generation of researchers to explore India’s intellectual heritage.
With the Padma Shri 2025, Prof. M. D. Srinivas is celebrated not just as a scientist but as a visionary who helped India reconnect with its rich scientific roots while shaping its future in education and research.
