Osamu Suzuki Receives India’s Padma Vibhushan Posthumously

Shri Osamu Suzuki, the late industrial titan and former Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, has been posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his monumental impact on trade and industry—particularly his role in forging an enduring Indo-Japanese automotive partnership.

Osamu Suzuki (born Osamu Matsuda on January 30, 1930), led Suzuki Motor for over four decades, first as CEO from 1978, then as Chairman until 2021, before becoming Senior Corporate Advisor. Under his leadership, Suzuki evolved into a global powerhouse renowned for efficient, affordable vehicles.

He is especially celebrated for pioneering Suzuki’s entry into India in 1983 via a joint venture with the Indian government, which led to the birth of Maruti Udyog Limited. This venture revolutionized mobility for Indian families through iconic models like the Maruti 800.

The honour was officially conferred by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28, 2025, with his son Toshihiro Suzuki—current Representative Director and President of Suzuki—accepting on his behalf.

Toshihiro expressed profound gratitude, stating: “This award belongs to all of us at Suzuki, Maruti Suzuki, and our partners… It also reflects the love of the Indian people towards Suzuki”
