In recognition of his decades-long service to the nation, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, former Vice President of India, has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award, in the field of Public Affairs.
Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Shri Naidu has been a towering figure in Indian politics, known for his oratory, statesmanship, and commitment to democratic values. His contributions span over five decades, including key roles in Parliament, the Union Cabinet, and as the 13th Vice President of India.
Born in 1949 in Nellore district, Shri Naidu began his political journey during the Jai Andhra Movement and the Emergency era, rising through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as a Rajya Sabha MP for four consecutive terms and held crucial portfolios such as Urban Development, Information & Broadcasting, and Rural Development in the Union Cabinet.
As a minister, he championed urban transformation through missions like Smart Cities, AMRUT, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, leaving a lasting imprint on India’s developmental landscape.
During his tenure as Vice President (2017–2022) and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Shri Naidu was lauded for upholding parliamentary decorum, encouraging the use of Indian languages in legislative proceedings, and emphasizing transparency and accountability in governance.
Known for his witty idioms, love for language, and deep knowledge of constitutional processes, Naidu remains an inspiration to political aspirants and public servants alike.
Awarding him the Padma Vibhushan, the Government of India recognized his lifelong dedication to public life, democratic institutions, and people-centric governance.
