In an unexpected twist to global music trends, the iconic Bhojpuri hit ‘Lollipop Lagelu’ has officially become the most played song on Spotify, overtaking international pop sensation Taylor Swift’s ‘Cruel Summer’.
Originally released in 2008 by singer Pawan Singh, Lollipop Lagelu has been a cult favorite in India for years, often played at weddings, parties, and meme compilations. But in a digital-age phenomenon, the track has found massive resonance with a global audience through viral TikTok trends, remix challenges, and DJ mashups.
According to Spotify’s official streaming data, Lollipop Lagelu has crossed over 1.9 billion streams, edging past Cruel Summer, which previously held the top spot with 1.87 billion plays.
Experts credit the surge to a mix of internet virality, ironic appreciation, and a global embrace of regional music cultures. “What Gangnam Style did to Korean pop in 2012, Lollipop Lagelu is now doing for Bhojpuri music on a whole new scale,” said music analyst Ravi Bansal.
Spotify also noted a sharp rise in playlists featuring Indian regional music, especially from Gen Z users across the US, UK, Germany, and Brazil.
With memes flooding social media and fans dubbing it the new “global anthem of chaos and celebration”, Lollipop Lagelu is no longer just a Bhojpuri classic — it’s now a historic chart-topper on the world’s biggest music platform.
