“Keya Hatkar, 14-Year-Old Author & Advocate, Wins Bal Puraskar for Art and Culture”

Keya Hatkar, a 14-year-old author and passionate disability advocate, has been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2025 in the Art and Culture category for her outstanding contribution to inclusive storytelling, creative expression, and cultural awareness.

With a voice far beyond her years, Keya is not just telling stories — she’s changing them. Through her writing and advocacy, she has brought visibility to the challenges and dreams of children with disabilities, blending art, empathy, and activism in a powerful way.

Keya published her first book at the age of 12, a heartfelt narrative that explored themes of accessibility, inclusion, and friendship. Since then, she has conducted workshops, spoken at national forums, and used her platform to push for more inclusive representation in Indian literature and the arts.

Her writing — whether poetry, short fiction, or essays — is widely celebrated for its depth, sensitivity, and cultural insight. Keya’s work reflects the diverse voices of India, especially those often unheard.

The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, India’s highest civilian honour for children under 18, was presented to Keya by the President of India. In his message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Keya’s commitment, saying:
“Keya Hatkar is not only shaping India’s literary landscape but also leading the way for empathy-driven cultural transformation.”

Beyond writing, Keya is actively involved in disability advocacy, collaborating with NGOs and schools to raise awareness about accessible spaces and inclusive education. She also uses art and storytelling to educate communities on how to build a more compassionate society.

Keya aims to publish more books, translate inclusive literature into Indian languages, and create platforms where young people of all abilities can express themselves freely. Her long-term vision includes making Indian art and culture more accessible to children with disabilities.

At just 14, Keya Hatkar stands as a beacon of creativity, courage, and compassion, proving that art can be a powerful tool for change — and that the pen, indeed, is mighty.
