India to Host Chess World Cup 2025 for the First Time

India is set to host the prestigious Chess World Cup 2025, marking a major milestone in the nation’s growing influence in global chess. The tournament will take place from October 30 to November 27, drawing top grandmasters from around the world to battle it out for the coveted title.

This will be the first time India hosts the Chess World Cup, a knockout-format tournament organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The event is also a key qualifier for the Candidates Tournament, which determines the challenger for the World Chess Championship.

The exact venue will be announced soon, with cities like Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai under consideration. Chennai, often referred to as the “Mecca of Indian Chess” and home to legend Viswanathan Anand, is a strong contender.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich praised India’s vibrant chess culture, saying, “India’s deep-rooted passion for the game and its recent dominance in international chess make it a fitting host for this grand event.”

The announcement comes at a time when Indian chess is witnessing an unprecedented boom, with stars like R. Praggnanandhaa, D. Gukesh, and Vaishali Rameshbabu making waves on the global stage.

With more than 200 players from over 100 countries expected to participate, the Chess World Cup 2025 promises thrilling battles, high stakes, and global attention — all set against the backdrop of India’s rising chess revolution.
