India Inaugurates Its Second Longest Cable-Stayed Bridge in Karnataka

In a major boost to infrastructure and connectivity in Karnataka, the Sigandur Bridge — also known as the Sharavathi Bridge — was officially inaugurated this month in Shivamogga district. Recognized as India’s second longest cable-stayed bridge, the Sigandur Bridge stands as a testament to the country’s growing engineering prowess and commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.

The newly inaugurated bridge spans the Sharavathi River, significantly reducing travel time between the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka. With a total length stretching over 1.8 kilometers, the cable-stayed structure is built with advanced technology that enhances durability, safety, and seismic resilience.

Chief Minister of Karnataka, along with senior officials from the Public Works Department and local leaders, attended the inauguration ceremony. In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the bridge’s role in boosting tourism, trade, and socio-economic development in the region.

“This bridge is not just a marvel of engineering, but a lifeline for people in this region,” he said. “It will open up new economic opportunities and improve access to healthcare, education, and markets for our citizens.”

The Sigandur Bridge is expected to become a prominent landmark in the state, drawing infrastructure enthusiasts, tourists, and civil engineering students alike. Built with an investment of over ₹1,000 crore, the bridge incorporates pedestrian pathways, cycle lanes, and lighting for safe night-time use.

With the inauguration of the Sigandur Bridge, Karnataka continues to lead the way in developing sustainable and futuristic infrastructure, contributing to India’s broader vision of a connected and progressive nation.
