“Honouring a Legend: Shri Nepal Chandra Sutradhar Awarded Padma Shri Posthumously”

The Government of India has posthumously conferred the Padma Shri on Shri Nepal Chandra Sutradhar from West Bengal, in honour of his lifelong dedication to the field of Art, particularly for his exceptional craftsmanship in traditional wood carving and idol making.

A revered name in Bengal’s artistic circles, Shri Sutradhar belonged to a long lineage of artisans known for their mastery in wood sculpture, clay modeling, and Durga idol making — a tradition deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of West Bengal. His finely detailed work, known for its spiritual depth and artistic precision, graced temples, festivals, and exhibitions across India and abroad.

Through his decades of work, Shri Sutradhar not only elevated traditional idol-making into a form of fine art but also mentored generations of young artisans, ensuring the continuity of a craft passed down for centuries. His contributions were particularly significant in preserving the distinctive Bengali style of Shilpa Kala (sculptural art) in a rapidly modernizing world.

“His hands carved devotion. His legacy shapes culture,” remarked one of his former students. “He may be gone, but his spirit lives in every idol, every chisel mark.”

The posthumous honour was met with heartfelt appreciation across Bengal’s art community, with tributes pouring in from cultural institutions, fellow craftsmen, and admirers of his work.
