Folk Legend Begum Batool Awarded Padma Shri for Contribution to Rajasthani Art and Cultural Harmony

Celebrated Rajasthani folk singer Smt. Begum Batool has been conferred with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, for her exceptional contribution to Art, particularly for preserving and promoting traditional folk forms like Maand, Bhajans, and Rajasthani devotional music.

Born in Nagaur district, Begum Batool began singing at a young age and quickly became known for her soulful renditions of bhajans—a unique journey considering her Muslim background. Her voice has resonated far beyond regional boundaries, serving as a powerful symbol of communal harmony and cultural unity.

Over the years, she has performed in more than 55 countries, including prestigious platforms in France, Tunisia, and the United States, bringing the spirit of Rajasthan to the global stage. She is also a master of traditional instruments like the tabla and dholak.

In her response to the award, Begum Batool said:

“This is not just my honour—it belongs to every artist who believes in the power of music to unite hearts. I sing bhajans because they give peace to my soul. Music knows no religion.”

She has previously been honoured with the Nari Shakti Puraskar and international accolades for her efforts in preserving dying folk traditions.

The Padma Shri awarded to Smt. Begum Batool in 2025 not only acknowledges her melodious journey but also celebrates the enduring legacy of India’s folk traditions and the role of music in building a more inclusive and harmonious society.
