In a groundbreaking moment for Indian chess, Divya Deshmukh has etched her name into the history books by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup. The 19-year-old prodigy from Nagpur secured a thrilling semifinal victory against Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk in a tense tie-breaker round.
This remarkable achievement has not only elevated India’s position in international women’s chess but also showcased Divya’s steady rise through the ranks. Having won multiple national and international titles at the junior level, her latest triumph marks a major milestone in her senior career.
“I am overjoyed. This moment is the result of years of hard work, support from my coaches, and belief in myself,” said an emotional Divya after the match.
Divya will now face top-seed Tan Zhongyi of China in the much-anticipated final. With this feat, she joins the likes of Viswanathan Anand, Humpy Koneru, and Dronavalli Harika in bringing global glory to Indian chess.
The All India Chess Federation (AICF) congratulated Divya, calling her performance “historic and inspirational” for young women across the country.
