Renowned Sanskrit scholar and astrologer Shri Ganeshwar Shastri Dravid has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 for his exceptional contributions to Literature and Education, especially in the fields of Vedic studies, astrology, and ritual science. A distinguished member of the Kashi Vidvat Parishad, he is widely respected for his role in reviving and sustaining ancient Indian knowledge systems.
Born on December 8, 1958, Shri Dravid has dedicated his life to studying and teaching the Krishna Yajurveda, guiding generations of students at the Sangveda Vidyalaya in Varanasi. His profound understanding of scriptures and precision in calculating auspicious timings (muhurtas) has made him a spiritual advisor for several landmark national events.
Most notably, Shri Dravid calculated the 84-second muhurta for the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Shri Ram Lalla at the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024—a moment watched by millions across India. He also played a key role in determining the muhurta for the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Bhoomi Pujan, reflecting his deep trust among spiritual leaders and national figures alike.
Appearing barefoot in simple dhoti and uttariya at the Padma Award ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shri Dravid humbly represented India’s age-old guru tradition. His simplicity and wisdom were lauded by the President, Prime Minister, and a wide cross-section of the public.
Besides being a scholar, Dravid is also a revered astrologer and teacher. He has remained committed to promoting Sanskrit learning, oral chanting traditions, and Vedic discipline in a modern context. His students, many of whom have gone on to become scholars themselves, continue to spread the legacy of Indian knowledge across the country.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated him, stating, “Shri Ganeshwar Shastri Dravid ji is a beacon of Bharatiya knowledge and tradition. His contribution to Dharma, Shastra, and Samskriti is priceless.”
The Padma Shri awarded to Shri Ganeshwar Shastri Dravid acknowledges the timeless value of India’s Vedic heritage and the quiet dedication of scholars who keep its flame alive. His recognition reaffirms the relevance of spiritual scholarship in shaping India’s cultural identity in the 21st century.
