Calligraphy Maestro Shri Achyut Ramchandra Palav Honoured with Padma Shri for Excellence in Art

Shri Achyut Ramchandra Palav, a pioneering figure in Indian calligraphy and script art, has been awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, for his exceptional contributions to the field of Art.

Known for revitalizing the traditional art of Indian lettering, Palav has transformed calligraphy from a niche craft into a vibrant form of visual expression. His journey began at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art and flourished under the mentorship of legendary typographer Prof. R.K. Joshi. Over the decades, he developed a signature style blending traditional Indian scripts—such as Devanagari and Modi—with contemporary aesthetics.

Palav’s works have adorned everything from murals and public spaces to Bollywood titles. His murals, especially the acclaimed Chitrakavita Bhinti series in Navi Mumbai, have made cultural and linguistic heritage accessible through visual storytelling. He has exhibited his works internationally and conducted calligraphy workshops across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Founder of the Achyut Palav School of Calligraphy and the annual Callifest, he has mentored hundreds of young artists, reigniting national interest in Indian scripts and type design.

Upon receiving the award, Palav remarked:

“Letters are more than words—they carry emotion, history, and culture. Through calligraphy, I strive to give each letter a soul.”

The Padma Shri is a fitting tribute to a man whose strokes have shaped the artistic landscape of Indian script and whose legacy continues to inspire a new generation of creators.

Shri Achyut Palav’s honour reflects the timeless power of Indian lettering and his unmatched dedication to preserving and elevating script as an art form.
