Veteran Telugu actor, philanthropist, and public representative Shri Nandamuri Balakrishna has been awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his immense contributions to Art, particularly Indian cinema, and his impactful role in public life.
A stalwart of the Telugu film industry, Balakrishna—fondly known as “Balayya”—has acted in over 100 films over a career spanning five decades. Known for his powerful screen presence and dynamic dialogue delivery, he has starred in several blockbusters such as Samarasimha Reddy, Narasimha Naidu, Legend, and Gautamiputra Satakarni. His recent performances continue to break records and inspire younger generations.
Son of legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, Balakrishna has seamlessly blended his cinematic career with public service. Since 2014, he has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Hindupur, representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
In addition to his political and cinematic achievements, he is the Chairman of the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute in Hyderabad, named in memory of his mother. Under his leadership, the hospital has grown into a symbol of affordable and quality cancer care for thousands across the region.
On receiving the Padma Bhushan from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Balakrishna stated:
“This honour is not just for me, but for every fan, every artist, and every individual who believes in the power of art to serve society. I dedicate this award to my parents and to the people of Andhra Pradesh.”
Leaders across the spectrum, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and members of the film fraternity, have congratulated Balakrishna, hailing him as a “people’s icon” and a “bridge between cinema and social change.”
