Tigst Assefa Shatters Women’s-Only Marathon World Record at 2025 London Marathon

Ethiopian marathon sensation Tigst Assefa has set a new women’s-only world record at the 2025 Virgin Money London Marathon, clocking an astonishing time of 2:15:50. The historic achievement took place amidst cheering crowds and perfect running conditions along the iconic London route.

Assefa’s performance broke the previous women-only record of 2:16:16 set in 2024, reaffirming her dominance in long-distance running. Her incredible pace and unwavering stamina left competitors trailing, including strong rival Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya.

The 32-year-old made her decisive move around the halfway mark and never looked back, surging ahead to cross the finish line in record-breaking style. Her effort was officially verified on site by Guinness World Records adjudicators.

Assefa, who already holds the overall women’s marathon world record (2:11:53 from the 2023 Berlin Marathon), continues to redefine excellence in the sport. “I am proud to make history in London. It is a dream come true to set another world record,” she said after the race.

The London Marathon itself witnessed over 56,000 finishers, the highest ever in the event’s history, and saw 32 official Guinness World Records titles set across various categories — from costumed runners to athletic feats — making it one of the most memorable editions to date.

Assefa’s triumph is not just a personal milestone but a moment of inspiration for female athletes around the world, showcasing the heights women’s endurance sports can reach.
