In a significant milestone for financial inclusion and banking infrastructure, Tamil Nadu has officially become the state with the highest number of ATMs in India, overtaking Maharashtra and setting a new national benchmark.
According to recent data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Tamil Nadu now hosts approximately 29,965 ATMs, including conventional ATMs, Cash Recycler Machines (CRMs), and White Label ATMs. This figure accounts for over 11.7% of India’s total ATM network, which currently stands at more than 2.2 lakh across the country.
“This reflects Tamil Nadu’s proactive approach to digital banking, financial outreach, and infrastructure investment,” said a senior RBI official.
The extensive ATM network in the state spans both urban hubs like Chennai and Coimbatore and rural regions, enhancing access to cash withdrawals, balance inquiries, and other banking services for millions.
Previously, Maharashtra held the top position with about 25,700 ATMs, comprising nearly 10% of India’s network. With this development, Tamil Nadu has positioned itself as a leader in combining financial inclusion with digital banking growth.

- Improved Rural Banking Access: Rural and semi-urban areas benefit from greater financial connectivity.
- Support for Digital Economy: A strong ATM network complements digital initiatives like UPI and mobile banking.
- Boost to Cash Availability: Especially important in cash-reliant sectors and regions with low internet access.
With this achievement, Tamil Nadu continues to lead in promoting balanced banking development, ensuring that financial services are not just digital, but also physically accessible to every citizen — from metro cities to remote villages.
