Nine-year-old Ira Subramanian from Pune has captured a gold medal at the 4th KIO Nationals – Cadet, Junior & Sub Junior Karate Championship 2025, held in Dehradun from June 12 to 15. Representing Maharashtra in the Sub-Junior Female Kumite (U‑9, –25 kg) category, Ira overcame competitors from five states to reach the top of the podium .
Her journey to gold was marked by a dramatic semifinal clash. Trailing 0‑5 against a formidable opponent from Punjab, Ira staged a stunning comeback, turning the tables to win 7‑5 with just 16 seconds remaining . Her determination played a key role in Maharashtra securing third place in the team standings.
Following her victory, Ira has been selected to represent India at the South Asian Karate Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka, later this year.
Ira began training at age six at SNBP Karate Champions under coach Bhavinya Aiwale, with her fitness regimen enhanced by Amit Kumar of Athlete Inside Her inspiring success highlights both her talent and the strong support she receives.
