NIMS Hyderabad Surgeons Remove Rare 7.5 kg Liver Cyst in Landmark Surgery

In a remarkable display of surgical precision and multidisciplinary expertise, doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, successfully removed a giant 7.5-kilogram cystic tumor from a 25-year-old woman—marking one of the largest liver cyst removals in India.

The young woman, a native of Warangal, had been experiencing chronic abdominal swelling, pain, and significant weight loss for several months. Medical imaging revealed an enormous biliary cystadenoma, a rare but potentially precancerous tumor, occupying almost her entire abdominal cavity.

Led by Dr. N. Bheerappa, Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, the NIMS team undertook a high-risk operation using Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA) technology—an advanced technique that safely separates soft tissue from vital organs with minimal blood loss.

“The tumor had grown so large that it displaced several abdominal organs. But with precise planning and advanced surgical tools, we achieved complete removal with no major complications,” said Dr. Bheerappa.

  • A biliary cystadenoma is a rare cystic tumor arising from the bile ducts, often in women between 20 and 50 years of age.
  • While generally benign, these cysts carry a risk of turning malignant if left untreated.
  • Surgical removal is the only definitive cure.
  • The 7.5 kg cyst stands as one of the heaviest liver cysts removed in India.
  • This case reinforces NIMS’s reputation as a center of excellence in advanced hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery.

The successful outcome demonstrates how public hospitals in India are equipped with world-class surgical talent and technology, rivaling private super-specialty institutions.

The patient is now recovering well, with restored appetite, reduced abdominal pressure, and a significant improvement in quality of life. She will continue follow-up care to monitor for recurrence and liver health.

This surgery is not just a medical achievement—it’s a life restored, a dream reclaimed, and proof that with the right team and tools, even the largest challenges can be overcome.
