Swayam Vilas Patil, a 16-year-old boy from Nashik, Maharashtra, with Down Syndrome and 50% disability, made history by successfully completing the 77th Open Water Long Distance Swimming Competition. Swayam swam an impressive 19 kilometers in the Bhagirathi River, covering the challenging route from Sadarghat to Gora Bazar Ghat.
Under the expert guidance of Coach Hari Arjun Sonkamble and the Murshidabad Swimming Association, the event was officially recognized by the Swimming Federation of India and affiliated with the Bengal Amateur Swimming Association (B.A.S.A). Swayam’s incredible feat was confirmed and certified by World Records India.
This achievement not only highlights Swayam’s extraordinary determination and endurance but also serves as an inspiration for differently-abled athletes across the nation, breaking barriers and redefining possibilities in sports.
