Karnataka Woman Gives Birth to India’s Heaviest Baby at 6.82 kg

In a rare and remarkable event, Nandini, a 19-year-old woman from Doddihalli village in Hassan district, delivered what is now believed to be India’s heaviest baby, weighing a staggering 6.82 kilograms (15 pounds). The baby girl was delivered via cesarean section at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and is reported to be in stable condition.

This newborn, measuring 62 centimeters in length, significantly exceeds the average Indian newborn weight of 2.5–3.5 kg, astonishing both doctors and medical experts. More remarkably, doctors confirmed that Nandini had no history of gestational diabetes or other common conditions associated with high birth weight.

“This is the largest baby we’ve seen in our hospital’s history, and possibly in India,” said Dr. Shankar, one of the attending physicians. “The mother had a smooth surgery, and both are recovering well. However, we’re keeping the child under observation for any complications typically associated with such large infants.”

The previous record for India’s heaviest baby was held by a boy born in Uttar Pradesh in November 2015, who weighed 6.7 kg. Nandini’s daughter has now officially surpassed that milestone.

Medical experts are conducting advanced tests to rule out underlying hormonal or metabolic causes for the unusually high birth weight. “So far, the baby appears healthy, feeding well, and breathing on her own,” said hospital sources.

  • India’s heaviest recorded newborn
  • Delivered safely via C-section
  • Born to a healthy, young mother with no prior medical complications

The case has drawn national attention, with pediatricians and endocrinologists noting the rarity of such a birth without medical complications. While globally, a baby born in Italy in 1955 holds the record at 10.2 kg, this Karnataka birth ranks among the heaviest documented globally in modern times.
