Sayali Gudhekar, India’s first female water polo coach and a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, is rewriting the script of Indian sports. Balancing a demanding role as the lead UI/UX designer at a leading MNC, Sayali recently led India’s U-21 women’s team to a remarkable clean sweep at the Indo-Sri Lanka Championship in Sri Lanka — her debut international assignment as a coach.
Captaining the Indian water polo team for the first time at just 14, Sayali’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and pioneering spirit. Speaking exclusively to The Bridge, she recounted her experience:
“It was an incredible journey. From Day 1, the team showed commitment and hunger to win. We prepared well during a month-long camp at SAI Bangalore. We had to go all out. There’s no mercy in water polo, one of the toughest sports,” she said.
The team’s performance showcased not just athleticism but also the growing support from the Swimming Federation of India (SFI), which has been instrumental in providing camps, international matches, and exposure opportunities.
Sayali’s transition from player to coach has been an emotionally empowering experience, inspiring a new generation of women athletes. Her story highlights the multifaceted achievements of women in Indian sports — from the pool to the boardroom.
As she looks ahead, Sayali’s focus remains on building a stronger, more competitive Indian water polo team, proving that with determination and passion, boundaries are meant to be crossed.
