In a tribute to the world’s largest democracy, India’s first Election Museum was inaugurated in January 2016 in the capital city. Set up by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the museum is located in the historic Old St. Stephen’s College Building at Kashmere Gate, Delhi, and serves as a one-of-a-kind destination chronicling the nation’s electoral journey.
Designed to educate citizens and celebrate the democratic process, the museum presents the evolution of Indian elections since independence, highlighting the scale, diversity, and technological advancement of the electoral system.
- Historic ballot boxes, voting machines, and electoral rolls
- Rare photographs of India’s first general elections (1951–52)
- Posters, slogans, and campaign memorabilia from various decades
- A display of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and VVPAT system
- Interactive exhibits showcasing voter awareness campaigns
Visitors can trace how the Election Commission has adapted to modern challenges while maintaining transparency, inclusion, and fairness.
“The museum is a celebration of India’s democratic values. It reminds every visitor that their vote shapes the nation,” said an ECI official during the inauguration.
