In a major step toward preserving prehistoric heritage and promoting scientific curiosity, India’s first dinosaur museum was inaugurated in Raiyoli village, located in Balasinor, Gujarat, on June 8, 2019. Known as the Indian Dinosaur Fossil Park and Museum, it stands at the very site where one of the world’s largest dinosaur fossil beds was discovered.
Built by the Gujarat Tourism Department, the museum is the first of its kind in India and one of the few globally located on an actual fossil site. It offers a unique, immersive experience for visitors to learn about the age of dinosaurs that once ruled this land over 65 million years ago.
- Life-size models of Rajasaurus narmadensis, a carnivorous dinosaur species discovered in the region
- Fossil displays, including dinosaur eggs and bones from the Cretaceous period
- 3D projection rooms, VR exhibits, and interactive kiosks
- Educational galleries explaining the origin, extinction, and evolution of dinosaurs
- A special section dedicated to India’s dinosaur history and global paleontology
Raiyoli, often called the “Jurassic Park of India,” is believed to have been a hatchery for dinosaurs, making it a significant paleontological site. The museum aims to educate children, students, and tourists about the fascinating prehistoric era in an engaging way.
“The museum is not just about bones and fossils. It’s about bringing science to life and inspiring the next generation,” said a Gujarat tourism official.
