India Rolls Out Its First ATM on Wheels: ICICI Bank Drives Financial Inclusion Forward

In a groundbreaking move to bring banking services closer to the people, ICICI Bank has launched India’s first ATM on wheels, marking a significant step toward financial inclusion in remote and underserved areas.

The mobile ATM — a fully functional, van-mounted cash dispenser — is designed to reach locations where setting up a permanent ATM is impractical. With this innovation, ICICI Bank becomes the first bank in India to take ATM services on the road.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to bring banking to every doorstep, especially in rural and hard-to-reach regions,” said an ICICI Bank official at the launch.

Equipped with real-time connectivity, the mobile ATM offers standard services such as cash withdrawal, balance enquiry, and mini statements, just like a regular machine. It is expected to be deployed during large public events, in villages, and even during emergencies to provide on-the-spot banking access.

The service is particularly significant for India’s rural population, where lack of infrastructure has often limited access to modern financial tools.

Local residents and financial analysts have praised the move, calling it a “game changer” for rural banking. The mobile ATM is also expected to aid disaster response efforts by delivering cash access when fixed banking facilities are disrupted.

  • Launched by: ICICI Bank
  • Year: 2002
  • Innovation: First mobile ATM service in India
  • Goal: To enhance banking access in rural, remote, and temporary locations
  • Impact: Bridges the urban–rural banking gap with mobility and ease

With this bold innovation, ICICI Bank is not only reshaping the future of banking but also driving India toward a more inclusive economy — one mile at a time.
