In a proud and historic moment for India’s space journey, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force is set to become the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS). The mission marks a significant milestone in India’s growing space ambitions and global collaboration in human spaceflight.
Group Captain Shukla, a decorated test pilot and a graduate of the Indian Air Force Academy, has undergone rigorous astronaut training under the Gaganyaan programme, India’s first human spaceflight initiative. His selection for the ISS visit comes as part of a bilateral agreement between ISRO and an international space agency, possibly NASA or Roscosmos, to provide Indian astronauts access to advanced spaceflight experiences ahead of India’s crewed missions.
“This mission is not just a personal achievement but a national milestone. I carry the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians with me,” said Group Captain Shukla in a statement following the announcement.
- Destination: International Space Station (ISS)
- Duration: Expected to stay for up to 14 days
- Objective: To conduct scientific experiments, test physiological responses to microgravity, and enhance India’s readiness for long-duration missions
- Launch Date: Tentatively scheduled for late 2025 or early 2026
While Rakesh Sharma remains the first Indian to travel to space in 1984 aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft, Shubhanshu Shukla will be the first Indian to step inside the ISS, which has so far hosted astronauts from over 20 countries.
This mission will not only elevate India’s profile in international space research but also enhance its preparedness for long-term human spaceflight missions, including those under Gaganyaan and future lunar exploration programs.
The announcement has sparked excitement across the country, with ISRO scientists, defence officials, and educators hailing it as a “moment of inspiration for generations of Indians.”
“This is the beginning of a new era in Indian space exploration. Group Captain Shukla’s mission will deepen our scientific capabilities and international partnerships,” said Dr. S. Somanath, ISRO Chairman.
As Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla prepares to soar beyond Earth’s atmosphere and make history aboard the International Space Station, the nation watches with pride. His journey will not only carry Indian excellence into orbit but will also ignite the dreams of countless young minds looking to the stars.
