An eight-year-old girl from Leeds who smashed the female world record for a “dead hang” by clinging to monkey bars for more than 35 minutes has been told her achievement won’t be recognised — because she’s too young.
Helena, a determined young athlete, surpassed the current female record of 12 minutes by an astonishing margin. The feat was recorded and timed, with video evidence sent to Guinness World Records for verification.
However, the organisation rejected her application, citing that individuals under the age of 16 are not eligible to attempt records deemed “highly physically demanding”, citing safety concerns.
Helena’s family, backed by their local MP, have called on Guinness to reconsider. “She’s shown incredible strength, determination and discipline — exactly the kind of qualities we should be celebrating and encouraging in young people,” said her mother.
Supporters have rallied around Helena, praising her inspiring effort and calling for a review of Guinness World Records’ age policies, especially when achievements are performed safely and under supervision.
For Helena, the disappointment hasn’t dulled her enthusiasm. “I just wanted to see how long I could hang on,” she said, smiling. “I’m going to try to beat my own time next!”
