A passionate bagpipe enthusiast from Cleethorpes, Daniel Fleming, has not only retained his Guinness World Record but has decisively smashed his own previous benchmark, doubling his extraordinary collection to more than 200 sets of the iconic instruments.
Fleming, 60, who originally hails from Arbroath, began his unique collecting journey in 1973, sparked by receiving his very first set of bagpipes from his late father. His dedication led him to establish the world record in 2013 with 105 sets. Over the past decade, he has diligently boosted that number to a remarkable 210 sets.
Speaking about his relentless pursuit, Fleming admitted that a fear of losing his coveted record had been a significant motivator. “I don’t know whether someone has 105 or indeed 106 sets, hence why I have still kept collecting,” he explained. With his current tally, he feels more secure, adding, “I sincerely hope that someone hasn’t got more than 210, I very much doubt it.”
He also credited his “wonderful neighbours” for their understanding and tolerance of his ever-expanding, and undoubtedly melodious, hobby. Fleming’s incredible dedication underscores the passion that drives world record holders and the unique stories behind their extraordinary collections.
