Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet delivered a jaw-dropping performance at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea on Friday, clocking 14:03.69 to run the second-fastest women’s 5000m time in history.
The 25-year-old athlete, fresh from her historic 3000m performance in Rabat just two weeks ago, narrowly missed Gudaf Tsegay’s world record of 14:00.21 set in Eugene last year.
Chebet’s run — a new Kenyan national record — also elevated her above Faith Kipyegon (14:05.20) in the all-time rankings. She dominated the race, finishing a massive 15 seconds ahead of the field.
Ethiopian star Freweyni Hailu clocked a personal best of 14:19.33 for second, while Italy’s Nadia Battocletti thrilled the home crowd with a national record of 14:23.15. Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom finished fourth in 14:24.20, with world record-holder Gudaf Tsegay placing fifth in 14:24.86.
Chebet’s sensational display underlines her position as one of the most dominant forces in women’s distance running today.
