Brian Grubb Makes History with World-First Drone Wakeskate–Base Jump Combo in Dubai

Extreme sports athlete Brian Grubb has stunned the world by becoming the first person to successfully combine drone wakeskating with base jumping, completing a jaw-dropping 300m (984ft) descent from the rooftop of a Dubai resort.

The historic stunt began atop a sky bridge’s infinity pool, perched on a 77-storey tower. Using a wakeskate — similar to a skateboard but designed for water — Grubb was towed 94 metres (308ft) across the rooftop pool by a drone, before launching himself off the edge into a freefall.

Seconds later, he deployed a parachute and safely base jumped to the ground, merging two adrenaline-fueled sports into a single seamless feat.

Base jumping typically involves leaping from fixed objects like cliffs or buildings and descending with a parachute. Wakeskating, on the other hand, involves riding a board on water — without bindings — towed by a boat or, in this case, a drone.

The feat not only showcased Grubb’s unmatched skill and nerve, but also marked a technological milestone in aerial and water-based extreme sports.

Grubb described the experience as “surreal and exhilarating,” and hopes it opens new creative avenues in the world of adventure sports.
