Bihar Artisan Created Largest Madhubani Painting set a World Record

PATNA, INDIA – April 27, 2025 – Bihar has proudly etched its name in the annals of art history by achieving a new Guinness World Record for the largest Madhubani painting. This monumental artwork, measuring an impressive 18.69 square meters (approximately 201.17 square feet), was created by a dedicated team of 50 women artists from the Mithila Chitrakala Sansthan in Saurath, Madhubani.

Under the expert guidance of Padma Shri awardee Baua Devi, these talented artists worked continuously for 50 hours, using only natural colors to bring this intricate masterpiece to life. The painting, a vibrant celebration of Bihar’s rich cultural heritage and the distinctive Madhubani art form, showcases detailed designs that are characteristic of this traditional style.

The official Guinness World Records certificates were presented to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at a special ceremony held at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna. This remarkable achievement comes just ahead of the Khelo India Youth Games 2025, which are set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 4. The record-breaking painting will be proudly unveiled during the opening ceremony of the games.

This feat not only highlights the artistic prowess and collaborative spirit of the women of Mithila but also brings global recognition to the ancient art form of Madhubani. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of India’s traditional arts and reinforces Bihar’s significant place in the world of culture and creativity.

The world’s largest Madhubani painting is now on display at the Patliputra Sports Complex, inviting visitors to marvel at its intricate details and vivid colors, a true fusion of tradition and innovation.
