A team of skilled surgeons at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH), AIIMS Delhi, has successfully performed North India’s first “bloodless” robotic breast surgery—a groundbreaking procedure conducted without the need for blood transfusion.
Utilizing the robot-assisted functional breast preservation surgery (RAFBPS) via the da Vinci Surgical System, the multidisciplinary team—comprising experts such as Dr. Sunil Kumar, Dr. M.D. Ray, Dr. Sandeep Bhoriwal, and others from the AIIMS surgical oncology department—led the operation. They executed the cancer removal and immediate reconstruction through a small incision near the armpit, preserving the skin, nipple, and sensory function, all while minimizing intraoperative bleeding
This dual-action surgery marks a major advancement in breast cancer treatment. Patients benefit from faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and reduced complication risks, particularly valuable for those with BRCA mutations or undergoing multiple treatments .
Dr. Sunil Kumar, Head of Surgical Oncology at IRCH, expressed pride in the team’s achievement, highlighting the procedure’s transformative potential. With over 900 breast surgeries performed annually, IRCH is rapidly evolving its minimally invasive and robotic surgical programs .
This milestone reinforces AIIMS Delhi’s position at the forefront of oncologic innovation, offering breast cancer patients a cutting-edge, less invasive path to healing and hope.
