Padma Shri Dr. J. M. Vyas: Pioneer and Visionary in Forensic Sciences Celebrates 50 Years of Service

Padma Shri Dr. J. M. Vyas, Vice Chancellor of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), has completed an illustrious career spanning five decades as a pioneering forensic scientist. Dr. Vyas began his journey on December 28, 1973, at the Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS), Gujarat, and since then has been a towering figure in forensic research and education in India.

Recognized for his exceptional contributions, the Government of Gujarat appointed Dr. Vyas as the first Director General of the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in 2009. Under his visionary leadership, the institution was elevated by the Government of India to the status of an Institution of National Importance and renamed the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) on October 1, 2020. Dr. Vyas was appointed its founding Vice Chancellor, transforming NFSU into a premier global center for forensic education and research.

Dr. Vyas’s relentless commitment to advancing forensic sciences has revolutionized the discipline in India, promoting best practices at an international level. His expertise has been sought in numerous high-level government committees and expert groups dedicated to policy formulation in forensic and allied sciences.

In honor of his outstanding service and impact, Dr. Vyas was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 2022, recognizing him as one of the nation’s foremost scientists.
