In a powerful display of environmental commitment and unity, the Gujarat Forest Department marked World Lion Day 2016 with a record-breaking Awareness Rally (Walkathon) under the leadership of Dr. Ram Ratan Nala (IFS), Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Division–Sasan-Gir (Gir National Park & Sanctuary).
An unprecedented 505,829 students, villagers, and local citizens from three districts of The Asiatic Lion Landscape participated in the massive campaign, taking a solemn pledge to “Save & Conserve Asiatic Lions”—the pride of India and the only wild population of Asiatic Lions in the world.
The large-scale rally was designed to promote awareness and foster responsibility among local communities toward wildlife preservation, especially the endangered Asiatic lions that call the Gir Forest their home. Through slogans, banners, and passionate voices, the participants walked together to underscore the importance of protecting this majestic species and its fragile ecosystem.
This extraordinary initiative stands as a testament to the region’s deep-rooted respect for wildlife and sets a new benchmark in community-driven conservation efforts.
