IIT Delhi Sets Guinness World Record with Largest Practical Science Lesson

In a spectacular celebration of science and student enthusiasm, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi etched its name into the Guinness Book of World Records by conducting the world’s largest practical science lesson, witnessed by over 2,000 students from nearly 80 schools across the city.

The record-breaking event, held on December 7, took place in a strictly monitored enclosure on the IIT Delhi campus. The science lesson, carefully curated for school students, focused on two catalytic chemistry experiments.

Ravi Shankar from IIT Delhi, one of the event coordinators, explained that the experiments were chosen specifically to align with the comprehension levels of the young participants. The first experiment involved the decolourisation of Methyl blue dye using iodine, demonstrating the principles of catalysis. The second was a vibrant and symbolic display — the formation of tricolour foam, linking chemistry with national pride.

Amazingly, both experiments were completed in under an hour, meeting the stringent standards required for a Guinness World Record. The event not only promoted scientific curiosity but also underscored the importance of hands-on learning and public engagement in science education.

This milestone adds yet another feather in the cap of IIT Delhi, one of India’s premier institutions known for its innovation and academic excellence.
