After years of determination, countless attempts, and a fierce but friendly rivalry, an angler has potentially reclaimed the coveted world record for the star-studded grouper — also known as baqueta — with a massive catch weighing 42 pounds, 15 ounces.
The record was previously held by his friend William, who landed a 37-pound, 14-ounce grouper. But now, with this new certified weight confirmed on land, the title may be coming full circle.
“This fish has been on my radar for a long time,” said the angler, who had twice held the record in the past. “It’s been broken twice since, and I’ve been working hard to get it back. After several near misses, this one finally felt right — and the scale confirmed it.”
The star-studded grouper, known for its deep-water habitat and elusive nature, is a prized catch among sportfishing enthusiasts, especially along the Baja coast. The successful record attempt is pending official recognition but has already generated buzz in fishing circles.
With this catch, the angler not only surpasses the current world record but also sets a new benchmark for the species — a thrilling moment in a long-standing personal and professional quest.
