In a record-breaking display of fun, strategy, and community spirit, 918 Monopoly enthusiasts gathered under one roof in Australia to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of people playing Monopoly simultaneously.
The historic event, held at the Sydney Showground, saw players of all ages rolling dice, buying properties, and building empires across hundreds of boards set up in a massive indoor arena. Organized by Monopoly Australia in collaboration with local gaming communities and schools, the event aimed to celebrate the iconic board game’s enduring popularity while bringing people together for a unique cause.
“This is more than just a game — it’s a celebration of unity, nostalgia, and record-breaking enthusiasm,” said Emily Hargreaves, spokesperson for Monopoly Australia. “To see nearly a thousand players deeply engaged in the same game at once was truly incredible.”
The attempt was overseen by official Guinness World Records adjudicators, who verified that all participants followed standard rules, actively played for the required minimum time, and used genuine Monopoly sets. After thorough checks, the record was officially confirmed, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 816 players set in the USA.
Participants received commemorative tokens, certificates, and limited-edition Monopoly merchandise, while the event also raised funds for youth education and community board game programs.
One participant, 12-year-old Liam Carter, summed up the spirit of the day: “I didn’t just pass GO — I passed into history!”
With this achievement, Australia now holds the monopoly on Monopoly records — and organizers hint that even bigger plans may be in the works for the game’s 100th anniversary in 2035.
