India Tops the World as the Largest Producer of Bananas

According to the latest report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, India has solidified its position as the world’s largest producer of bananas, cultivating a staggering 34.53 million tonnes in 2022. This massive output accounts for 25.51% of the global banana production, which reached an impressive 135.11 million tonnes last year.

India’s dominance in banana production puts it well ahead of other major producers, including China (11.77 million tonnes), Indonesia (9.24 million tonnes), and Nigeria (8.01 million tonnes). While India leads in sheer volume, the per capita banana production crown goes to the Caribbean nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. With a small population of just 104,000, the country produces more than 555 kg (about 4,700 bananas) per person annually. Costa Rica follows closely with 487 kg per capita.

Bananas remain a vital fruit crop globally, and India’s contribution continues to play a key role in meeting worldwide demand.
