Dr. Henry Wesley Voysey – The First Professional Geologist in India (1818)
Dr. Henry Wesley Voysey, originally a medical doctor, became the first professional geologist in India in 1818.
Conducted early geological surveys in India under the British administration.
Studied rock formations, minerals, and fossil deposits.
His work laid the groundwork for systematic geological studies in India.
In 1836, D.H. Williams was officially deputed by the British rulers to survey the coal-bearing areas of erstwhile Bengal (now parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar).
His survey marked the beginning of coal exploration in India.
Provided scientific insights into the coal reserves, supporting industrial growth.
Led to the discovery and development of coalfields in Raniganj, Jharia, and Giridih, which remain vital to India’s energy sector.
Voysey’s and Williams’ work set the foundation for the Geological Survey of India (GSI), which was later established in 1851.
Their research paved the way for mineral exploration, mining industries, and economic development in India.
These pioneers played a crucial role in India’s geological history, contributing to its mining and resource exploration sectors.
