The Calcutta High Court, established on July 1, 1862, under the Indian High Courts Act of 1861, is the oldest high court in India. It exercises jurisdiction over West Bengal and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The court’s building was designed by British architect Walter Granville, who was inspired by the Cloth Hall in Ypres, Belgium. The court is located in Kolkata, with a permanent circuit bench in Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
With a sanctioned strength of 72 judges, the current Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court is Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan. The court holds significant historical and judicial importance, both as the oldest high court in India and as a central institution in the country’s judicial system.
